Medical Marijuana can be a helpful way to manage medical challenges when other modalities are not affective. Members of the provider staff are certified to evaluate for and prescribe Medical Marijuana to seasonal and full-time Florida residents in the state of Florida.
Many people believe that pain is the most prominent indication for Medical Marijuana use. There are nine disease entities listed in Florida as indications for Medical Marijuana. These entities can be found on the OMMU “need to know facts” web site. Chronic pain due to one of these diagnoses is the only pain indication there is. There are some qualifiers (loopholes) that can significantly widen the indications. Your prescriber knows what these are and how to use them so that you can get the card that you clinically need. Marijuana should not be used when driving or when operating machinery. Occasionally, if taken Marijuana can impair judgment. These reactions, although unpleasant, are not lethal.
The laws governing the certification for Marijuana are strictly state (Florida) laws. As with all other states where marijuana is legal, the Federal government has not legalized the use of the drug. Subsequently the Rohrabacher-Farr law prohibits government funds from being disbursed for the purpose of pursuing and prosecuting the patient or the physician from us or prescription. Marijuana, however, is a schedule one category drug. This means that the Federal Government continues to take the position that Marijuana has a high potential for abuse and that it has little if any medicinal value. Over recent years, clinical studies have found Marijuana to be beneficial in the treatment in a significant number of disease and injury presentations. Subsequently, Florida has legalized it only when prescribed by a specially trained physician.
A seasonal Marijuana card is for seasonal residents (part time Florida residents, “Snowbirds”) It is possible to certify part time residents whose primary home is in another state. The process, however, is a little bit different, but not more complicated. The resident has to prove that they own a home and reside in Florida for a required number of months out of the year to qualify.
Marijuana is NOT physically addictive. Like any drug that also has mind altering properties, it can be misused. Recreational use over time becomes mentally addictive. Your doctor is aware of this possibility and will advise accordingly. Note: Ultimately the responsibility is yours to use medical marijuana.
